It is estimated that there are more than 175,000 mobile apps and over 326,000 mobile websites available for those with smart mobile devices in their pocket. Users have all types of mobile applications available: games, utilities, social networking, news, weather, reference, travel, productivity tools and more. Users have come to expect having information available mobile style. And having information available mobile style is only expected to increase.

It is hard to deny, mobility increases the workforces’ productivity and it takes your business to the next level. However, for a business, weighing the options to go mobile app &/or mobile website is a big deal that needs careful consideration. Here are some major points to consider:

Mobile App

Is developed for a specific mobile device, download and installation required.

Updates, download and installation required.

Development required for each mobile device platform.

Your business will need a very large budget with a well-defined strategy to get top rankings to be found with the search engines.

App store approvals may be required.

Ability to use all GPS, camera, voice, RFID, address book, calendar capabilities.

There can be publishing/certifications fees.

Costs more to develop/maintain. Consider your businesses updates, plus updates as devices change.

Sales revenues are shared with app store.

User has full control and is seamlessly integrated with the mobile device.

Mobile Website

Is developed specifically for mobile devices, no downloads or installation required.

Updates automatically available.

Runs on all web enabled mobile devices.

A good SEO marketing strategy will increase your traffic volume.

Anyone can access your mobile website.

For security and privacy concerns access to address books/calendars are limited.

No publishing/certification fees.

Costs less to develop/maintain. Your developer has complete access for updates when requested.

Sales revenues are the businesses.

User experience depends on your mobile website design.

Understanding the who, what, and where of your user base will also be of great benefit to you. Even though mobile apps are all the rage in popularity and lots of fun, look at all your options to pick the best solution for your business to go mobile style.

Please choose your mobile style wisely. And remember to be a responsible mobile device user.

Cheers!

Well, last week I wrote about RSS feeds for you as the Internet user, this week it’s about you as the Web site owner. This is a fantastic tool for site owners! Getting directly to the point, you need to add an RSS Feed to your site to increase your visibility. Just by adding an RSS button to your site, you can double your site’s visibility. And this little button makes you appear to be a more credible expert in your field.

Need more reasons? Okay, here are several more reasons to add RSS feeds to your site:

Deliverability: Subscribers request your information, no need to get a visitor’s permission, no need to wonder if the email was blocked by spam filters, and no need to worry if your message goes unopened or deleted.

Value: It keeps your customer conveniently connected; their RSS reader will provide a list of your keyword headline news articles, promotions, etc.

Content: Use multiple RSS feeds to deliver target content; visitors will be able to choose the content that peaks their interests. For example, a customer may want to subscribe only to information about blogging, and not e-commerce information.

Syndicate: Offer third party information on your site that compliments your field of business, rather than developing your own content.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Write your content using your specific keywords and phrases to help build your search engine rankings. Your site has the potential to get picked up and used as new content for other sites, which will push your site up the ranks.

Most platforms will automatically set up an RSS feed for you. If you are just getting started take a look at https://www.blogger.com/start or http://wordpress.com/.

Cheers! Here’s to having another effective marketing tool.

What most business owners realize in this economic downturn is the decrease in revenue. So naturally, cutting back on the overhead will save the day …right? Trimming the fat will determine our future …right? Limiting or eliminating spending on marketing is the right move …right?

Don’t make the mistake of assuming all businesses are pulling back on their initiatives. In fact, your competitors may be counting on your nervousness. Now is the time to strategize and market smarter. Targeting your audience, targeting those personas on your website, improving your e-marketing plan … those need to happen now. How the heck do we know this?

As a service provider to many businesses in California and the east coast, we are seeing the trend of scaling down on expensive ads and shot-gun tactics to sharpshooting optimized techniques. The best part … it’s working. They are seeing real results in this economy. Real visitors, real conversions, real sales.

What should you do? You should start … start somewhere. Start online. Here are 4 real goals for your business:

Email your customers – send them a straight forward email about your new deals, new products and more. Use inexpensive services like Constant Contact (www.constantcontact.com) to help you achieve this.

Freshen up Your Website – even if it’s just a couple new images and new content, you need to do it now.

Be Found – Google is your friend. Be sure to add your business to Google’s free local business listings (www.google.com/local/add). Yes it’s free!

Socialize – get your Facebook page and Twitter account set up for your business. Your competition may be doing this already. It’s just one more audience that you’re not taking advantage of – And it’s free.

So don’t panic. Take a deep breath before you jump. The water’s fine. You can still market to people in this environment successfully.

These days, it’s all about leads. While larger companies with significant overhead continue to adjust with layoffs and cutbacks, smaller business remain agile and busy. Gaining new customers at a lower COA (cost of acquisition) becomes even more important than ever. Contacting potentials and existing clients can be a full time job in of itself. So where does a business focus it’s efforts to gain new leads?

To help you in your lead ventures, I’ve compiled five key points that all small businesses can use. Already tried some of these? Then try the ones you haven’t yet. All of these tasks require low to medium effort and anyone mildly technically savy can complete these.

Print and Mail

Send a postcard – companies like Modern Postcard (www.modernpostcard.com) and Postcard Press (www.postcardpress.com) have significantly dropped their printing and mailing pricing to make this a viable direct mail venture. They’ll even design your campaign if you lack the design resources.

Email

You too can send an email to all your existing clients like a pro. Services like Constant Contact (www.constantcontact.com) and Vertical Response (www.verticalresponse.com) make email marketing accessible to you. You can even try out Vertical Response for free.

Facebook Ads

Don’t be afraid … it’s not that difficult. If your in-laws are on Facebook (www.facebook.com), you can be too. After you create a Facebook page for your business, start a pay-per-click ad directly on Facebook and target your specific audience. This may not work fro every business or product type, but it’s effective and manageable.

Click to Call

Already have a website? Make it easier for visitors to call you on th phone. Services like Ring Central (www.ringcentral.com) offer click to call features that allow you to place a click to call back function on your website for very little cost. The call to action on your website is highly visible and gratifying to the visitor.

Homepage Makeover

If your website sort-of works for you now, imagine what a little optimization can do for your business? Simple edits to a tired homepage can make the difference between a visitor and a conversion.
